Did the eruptions of Mt. Vesuvius after 79 AD damage the the excavations of Pompeii?

Earthquakes prior to an eruption may have caused damage to the remains. But the amount of ash over the site would have protected it. Also, it depends on the direction of the eruption, an earlier eruption covered a stone age settlement on the opposite side of Vesuvius while leaving the area to west (where pompeii would later be built) almost untouched.
