Why is Mona Lisa's smile considered so interesting?

I've seen it (well not the real thing, just reproductions of course) and I just don't get it. It kinda looks like she's smirking....big deal! Is Leonardo Da Vinci considered a genius cuz he knew how to paint a smirk?
