Argon is a poor conductor of heat and a very poor conductor of electricity, but, rather surprisingly in view of its status as an inert gas, it can be ionised into the plasma state, whereupon it becomes an electrical conductor. This principle is made use of in electrosurgical machines for cutting and coagulating tissues.
