Buy kitchen island, change countertop to granite?

I'm looking to buy a kitchen island. The ones with a wood countertop are so much cheaper than with a granite countertop. I was thinking I could get one of these, and then go to home depot or Lowes and get some of the 12x12 granite tiles and then just trying to fab up a granite countertop. Does this sound like it will work? How would I go about doing that? What do you think the end result will be? Will it look cheesy?
