Period or "spotting"?

I thought periods were always darker and thicker. It is time for my period (So the doctor said wait and see if it goes away.) but this discharge is very light red and thin/watery. Of course, I usually have one period a month, but this is my second bleeding episode this month. I'm 40 so could this be menopause? I guess I'll just wait.
